Of course, the most asked question at this point is: What is YouTube marketing and why should you care?

 

Put simply, YouTube is one of the most underutilized platforms on the web when it comes to digital marketing. Not only is YouTube the second biggest search engine on the Internet (right after Google – which happens to own YouTube) but it’s also an incredibly powerful tool for persuading audiences and generating clicks and conversions.

 

If a picture paints a thousand words, how many words does a moving picture with sound and graphics paint?

 

On top of all that, YouTube offers many of the advantages of social media marketing – it gives you a way to build a following that you can market to in future; however, unlike Facebook or Twitter where there’s a large element of luck involved, success on YouTube is all about having something interesting to say and a unique way to say it. When you have that, YouTube can deliver you almost unlimited success.

Hi [firstname],

There are lots of things you can use YouTube for, and this will color the way you approach using the platform.

For example you can use it to build your brand.

There are countless examples of YouTube celebrities who are now making a TON of money selling products to their legions of fans, and getting sponsors for their videos. If you want to join this exclusive club, you’d better have something interesting or useful to say, and be charismatic in your delivery. This will allow you to build up a large following, which in turn can lead to a lot of opportunities for your business and for you personally.

You can use YouTube for content marketing.

Usually the phrase “content marketing” is used to describe blog posts and other written content – but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you look at some of the biggest blogs and websites on the net you will see they upload regular content to their YouTube channels to go alongside their written articles and reviews. This gives access to a much wider audience, provides options for their most loyal followers, and elevates the quality of their production above their competitors.

YouTube is perfect for viral videos.

Some caution is need here, though. Some people think they can put a sales video up, it will go viral, and they’ll get a tsunami of traffic to their website. It doesn’t work that way. Sales videos rarely go viral. For a video to go viral it has to be humorous or entertaining. Put your logo and URL at the end by all means, but don’t expect to get much traffic from it.

Finally you can use YouTube for advertising, pure and simple.

You can make TV commercial-type videos, upload them to your channel and then embed them in your content, your social media and anywhere else they might get seen. You can also use these as part of YouTube’s advertising program and show them to followers of other brands.

Day 3

Subject: [firstname] Here’s how to get started

Hey [firstname]!

Now you know what you can use YouTube for, the next question is: How are YOU going to use it and, what is your marketing plan going to be? There are a number of options here and your marketing plan is going to depend on the type of business you are running, your goals and more. Nevertheless, these are the basics.

First off, it makes sense to develop a brand. If you already have a brand, that’s great. If not, spend some time developing a business name, logo etc. This is important because it will allow you to tie all of your online activities together, and to get more from every video you upload.

When you setup your channel and start uploading videos, don’t go after instant sales in the beginning. Instead, use your YouTube channel to build brand awareness, and give your viewers useful information for free so they’ll subscribe – kind of like you would do with your blog, really.

Next, decide on the type of video you want to have on your channel. You can either have videos where you appear on screen, or ones which are graphics with your voiceover. I’ll go into more details about the technical aspects tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Finally, decide on how often you’re going to post your videos. A lot of this is going to depend on how technically complicated your videos are going to be. Also, bear in mind that building a successful YouTube channel is a big commitment, so you have to think about how much time you have available to devote to it. In the beginning, uploading a new video once a week is probably best. Upload on the same day each week, so your subscribers know when to expect a new video from you.

Day 4

Subject: Let’s get technical, [firstname]

Hi [firstname],

I suppose you could also call today’s lesson “Video Production 101” as I’m going to give you information that will enable you to “hit the ground running”.

Like I mentioned yesterday, you can either have videos where you appear on screen, or ones which are graphics with your voiceover.

If you’re going to appear on screen, make sure you get the lighting right. “Rembrandt lighting” is the best. Likewise, make sure the audio is clear and free from distractions like wind noise, crackles and “noises off”. Use a lavalier microphone for best results.

Invest in a good quality video camera. You can generally pick up good second user or refurbished one on eBay for a very reasonable price. If you’re on a tight budget, you can always use your smartphone if the camera is good enough. Hold the phone longways so that the video fits in the YouTube player window properly. Bear in mind that people will judge you by the quality of your video, so rehearse your delivery until you appear confident. Edit your video to cut out any mistakes, and add your logo and website URL at the end. You can use free editing software like DaVinci Resolve to get a professional result.

If you don’t want to appear on camera, you can create graphic slides using presentation software like Microsoft Powerpoint(TM) and record and edit the presentation using Techsmith Camtasia. Powerpoint comes bundled with most Windows computers, and there is a free trial version of Camtasia, so you won’t need to shell out a lot of money to begin with. Invest in a good, quality microphone; and again, make sure the audio is clear and free from distractions.

Generally speaking your videos should be in HD. Minimum HD720, although YouTube prefer them in full HD1080. Either way, they should be NTSC 30 fps and 16:9 ratio. Full technical specs can be found here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4603579

Day 5

Subject: [firstname] Here’s how to get the most from YouTube.

Hey [firstname]!

When you start uploading your YouTube videos, you will get your own YouTube channel – in fact, if you’ve got Gmail or Google + you’ve got a YouTube channel already.

Your channel is a central URL where your fans will be able to see your new content and learn all about you. By default, it’s a fairly blank page, but you can easily customize it by uploading a header graphic, profile picture etc. This is a great place to put your logo, or another image that will help to reinforce your brand. Treat it like you would your Facebook page; in fact, it’s best to be consistent across all social media channels – including YouTube.

Another important section on your channel is the “about” tab. Here you can write a bit about your brand and what makes it unique. This should be persuasive – explaining what your business does, as well as getting people excited about your channel. You can also try to highlight some of your most popular videos and describe things that you have coming soon. Insert a few keywords as this will also help your channel to get found by search engines.

Once you have uploaded a few videos, create a Channel Trailer to show off everything unique and interesting about your channel in a brief, TV commercial style clip. This can be a great way of getting visitors to subscribe.

You should also link your website and social media profiles to your channel. Linking your Twitter and Facebook pages is a great way too co-ordinate your efforts and get more people to follow you on those platforms. Likewise, have a link to your YouTube channel on your Facebook and Twitter profiles and let your followers know each time you post a new video. Adding your website will give you the ability to link-out to your site in your labels and comments – very useful for SEO.

Day 6

Subject: Jumpstart your visitor numbers, [firstname]

Hi [firstname],

Normally, it takes a while for people to find your YouTube channel via SEO. Your channel could languish for months before you start to see much traffic, but there is a sneaky shortcut you can use to get traffic to your YouTube channel – AND you can use it while people are watching your competitors’ videos!

I’m talking about PAID YouTube advertising!

This is intended for regular advertising, and usually people advertise products or services, but you can use it to drive traffic to your YouTube channel.

Here’s how…

First off, you’ll need to create a short “trailer” type video that encourages people to visit your channel. Then, using YouTube advertising, you put this video at the start and at break points on other people’s videos. This way, you can ensure your content is seen by lots of people in a place where it will be successful.

YouTube advertising works just like Google Ads or Facebook Ads. That is to say, it’s Pay Per Click (PPC). YouTube advertising also allows you to target your viewers – although the targeting is not as extensive as Facebook’s and only really works when somebody is signed in. At other times it just works off the visitor’s IP address.

Bear in mind, though, that YouTube ads are also interrupting (read annoying) in nature. This is unlike Google Ads, for example, where users are actively looking for content. Statistics suggest that YouTube videos aren’t very good for selling stuff – it’s reckoned that 80% of users have never bought a product because of a YouTube ad. Nevertheless, if all you want to do is arouse people’s interest so they visit your site, there could be some mileage in this approach. If your ad is shown on a really popular channel, you can also leverage the “good karma” of that channel, and some people might see it as an endorsement.

In this final installment, I want to give you a few “do’s and don’ts” to help you get the most from marketing on YouTube.

DO recognize that the power of YouTube marketing is in its ability to persuade and to sell an idea.
DO think long and hard about what you can genuinely achieve and in what time frame. Have a good think about the type of video that will best suit your goals as well.
DON’T go in front of the camera if it’s not something you’re good at.
DON’T have videos with generic or dull subjects and titles.
DO embed your YouTube videos on social media, your blog and elsewhere.
DO have calls to action at the end – and consider asking people to share, like and subscribe.
DON’T let your YouTube channel become a ghost town – post regularly.
DON’T be salesy in your videos – you’ll just turn people off.
DON’T make your videos too long.
DO record in HD – preferably 1080.

Perhaps most importantly…

DO make sure your videos comply with all YouTube’s T&Cs
DON’T post anything offensive – you don’t want to end up getting banned.
